Reflections is an installation of three, nine and a half foot tall towers. Each tower is bisected at 4 feet off the ground leaving a foot and half opening. The towers are arranged in a line such that the long side of the piece is facing the longer walls of the room. It is positioned in the approximate center of the space. The towers are constructed of white melamine, and suspended from the ceiling with 3/8” threaded steel rods. Inside the lower towers is a plexiglass reservoir that contains approximately two gallons of water. Copper plates run from the inside of the reservoir to a space inside the tower where the electronics reside. Underneath the reservoir is a tray of sixteen LCD screens arranged in a four by four grid.
The screens are populated with two pictures of black circles on a white background. The size of the circle changes between the two pictures. This arrangement provides the most contrast and makes the shapes “pop” on screen. Touching the water causes the image on the screen to change as seen in the movie below.
Reflections is controlled by an Arduino board. The water is touch sensitive through the use of the QT110 integrated circuit. If you’re interested in my source code, please contact me.
